Garden Tables: Taking a Central Role

With summer just around the corner, the Great British garden is soon to return to
its full splendour, offering a space to socialise, soak up some sun and relax while
enjoying all the natural beauty that surrounds us.

While a well-kept lawn and an attractive flower display can play an important part in
creating the idyllic outdoor space we all want from our gardens, furniture can also be
vitally important in delivering the look and atmosphere you’re after.

And as Victoria Maw recently wrote for the Financial Times' Inside Out feature,
furniture, which was once seen as a “mere sideshow to the garden itself”, has now
evolved to take a more central role.

Initially this trend is thought to have been the reserve of elegant hotel gardens, but
now homeowners also want to enjoy the comforts you’d normally associate with
interior design while sitting out in the backyard.

Commenting on the change in Victoria Maw’s article, high-end furniture provider
Simon Chaplin said: “Gardens and patios are becoming the new room of the house.
Large furniture houses are developing new outdoor ranges to complement their
indoor collections.”

As this movement towards more stylish outdoor seating and garden tables grows, it’s
proving easier to buy lavish outdoor sofas, soft carpets and many other fashionable
furnishings that can be enjoyed late into the evening thanks to the light of a free-
standing lamp.

In following these fashions, we can enjoy all of the aesthetic beauty and style we’ve
come to expect from our indoor furniture in the refreshing outdoors.

Many of the items at the forefront of this movement can veer towards the more
expensive end of the market, such as ‘high-tech pergolas’ costing tens of thousands
of pounds or modernist transparent cubes made from plant and plastic fibres.

However, with Littlewoods’ garden furniture you can achieve style, comfort and
durability without having to re-mortgage your house. Its fantastic range, including
superb garden table and chairs sets, will transform your outdoor space into an area
that’s perfect for entertaining guests at evening soirées or hosting family BBQs all
throughout the summer and for years to come.

I am starting a new series on the blog called "favorite spaces" where I will feature interior spaces that stole my heart. The first space I would like to feature is Bri Emery's loft in downtown Los Angeles.

Do you read Rue Magazine? I am obsessed. If you are ever in need of a dose of inspiration, head over to Rue. Bri Emery is the online magazine's Art Director.

I love her use of modern and vintage with pops of color throughout the space.

You can read the full story in the 2011-Holiday Issue of Rue Magazine, and you can find Bri on her blog.

This or That

Graphic Nails

Graphic prints and bold patterns were all over the Spring/Summer 2012 runways, and they weren't just on clothes. Nail art has been more popular then ever, and painting graphic patterns is all the rage!

Felt Baby Shoes

How was your weekend?! I had the chance to meet my best friend's new little angel, Avalina Rose. She is so precious and I love her to pieces. She is just as beautiful as her mom. We are all waiting at the edge of our seats for the arrival of my other best friend's baby, who has decided that he/she is way to cozy to leave the comforts of their mommy's belly just yet.

Celebrating Life

Hello friends! A lot is going on behind the scenes here at Lilac and Grey. My two best friend's are welcoming their first little babies this week (one of them is in labor as I type this!) We are also celebrating my Nona's 87th birthday this weekend. While I am traveling and celebrating life's milestones, I will leave you with some pretty photos to look at...

Decorating with Lanterns

When we honeymooned in Greece, a few of our hotels were decorated with the most beautiful candle lit  lanterns. They lined the pools, steps, and walk ways. It was so romantic and peaceful to walk back to our room at night in the subtle candle light. I have always wanted to decorate with lanterns since then...

Because it is HER Day!

It is hard to define a "mother" these days. Some women who are not even mother's are a mother in someone else's eye. A mother's "role" has come a long way in the past few decades, and now they could be defined as "Super Moms." They not only run a household, but they are also a wife, a gym partner, a chauffeur, a gourmet chef, and event planners...

On Sunday, celebrate the mom's in your life, they deserve it!

What's for Breakfast?

I was never a "breakfast person" but more of a "brunch person." I would typically go from when I woke up at 7:00 to around 11:00 am fueled only on coffee. These days I am trying to eat a little something before 8:00 am. I have always had a very slow metabolism, and although I used to say it was genetic, it is most likely to be slow because of my sluggish eating habits.

Here are my current breakfast choices...

A poached egg with toast.

Old fashioned oatmeal with fruit.

Greek yogurt with blueberries, raspberries, or a teaspoon of honey (you can find this homemade yogurt recipe HERE.)

Today I splurged a little and had a crispy croissant with some strawberry preserves.

What do you eat for breakfast?

Tuesday Table-Scape Guest Post

Hello everyone! My name is Alicia and I blog about my life and all of the things I love over at alicia doll.
This Spring and Summer all I can think about are outdoor brunches with beautiful tablescapes to match.
My favorite style right now is anything bright and colorful with Moroccan flair, so when I saw this table setting I instantly fell in love.

1. A must for any table setting... gorgeous flowers. I specifically am loving hot pink ranunculus!
2. Fun napkins and linens. These ombre napkins in shades of orange, pink, and red fit the bill.
3. It couldn't be a Moroccan-inspired party without tea glasses. I love them in orange!
4. A perfect white dessert stand. Love white dinnerware mixed and matched with color and pattern in the form of bright linens and glassware.

I hope this inspires you to have a beautiful bright brunch of your own! Thanks for having me Cara!

Let's Graduate!

It's graduation season, and we are headed down to South Carolina for my sister's college graduation. I remember how I felt the day I graduated college. It was like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders and I had a clean slate. It also seemed that the world was so BIG and I was so small, but the confidence that I had a college degree made me feel like I could conquer the world. I was ready for my new life-As an adult.

To all the graduates out there, especially Geena, be so very proud of your accomplishment, and use that same drive and focus you had these past four years to succeed in your career. As long as you stay true to yourself, and follow your heart, you will be a success!

The elephant symbolizes good luck, obstacles overcome, remembrance, slow accent to success,

strength, power, and wisdom.

Lilac and Grey

Lilac and Grey
1./ 2./ 3./ 4./ 5./ 6./ 7.

I am often asked how I came up with my blog name Lilac and Grey- and although I would love to have an exciting or meaningful story behind it- I don't. I simply tried to think of a name that was simple and flowed. I threw around some word combinations, and thought of Lilac and Grey, and it stuck. That's it.

How did you come up with your blog name?
